What’s New: MRR Metrics Configuration

Here’s a scenario that probably sounds familiar.

A customer signs up for your Pro plan at $100 per month. Everything is fine. Then you give them a 20% discount for 6 months as a retention gesture. Their MRR drops to $80.

Is that Contraction? For some teams, absolutely. Revenue went down. That’s a contraction event, regardless of the reason. For other teams, not at all. The customer didn’t downgrade. They didn’t remove features. You just chose to charge them less. That’s not a signal about product value, it’s a business decision.

Both answers are correct. But they lead to very different NRR numbers.

Where to Find the New Options

Navigate to Analytics → Settings → MRR Metrics Configuration. Find the Expansion/Contraction Definition section.

Choose how Expansion and Contraction are calculated:

  • Plan/Add-on Change Based
Only customer-initiated plan upgrades, downgrades, and add-on purchases count. Discounts, manual adjustments, and promo credits are ignored.
  • MRR Change Based
Every MRR change counts. Discounts, credits, manual edits: anything that moves revenue up or down gets reflected in Expansion and Contraction.

Important note: Changes require recalculation to take effect. Your historical NRR charts will rebuild based on your new definition.

Why This Matters

Most billing platforms hardcode one definition. You get what you get. If their philosophy doesn’t match yours, you’re stuck exporting data to spreadsheets and recalculating manually.

UniBee takes a different approach. We recognize that “expansion” means different things to different businesses.

For product-led teams: You care about whether customers actually find more value over time. Discounts and manual adjustments are noise. You want Plan/Add-on Change Based.

For finance-led teams: You care about every dollar. A discount that reduces MRR is real contraction, regardless of intent. You want MRR Change Based.

Clearer Upgrade Details in Analytics

For, instance, a company admin stares at their revenue table. The plan price is €35, but the payment shows €21.56. No discount applied. No promo credit used. However, the numbers just don’t add up.

This scenario happens more often than you’d think. Customers upgrade mid-cycle. The billing system calculates prorations – credits for unused time on the old plan, charges for the remaining period on the new plan. The final payment makes perfect sense to the code. But to a human looking at a summary table? Complete mystery.

UniBee Analytics now solves this confusion.

The Problem: Missing Context

Before this update, the revenue detail table showed the end result without the math behind it. Now when you click into that payment, you see the actual calculation.

Description Unit price Quantity Total
Unused Time On 1st Pro_10 monthly after 2026-04-07 (83.3%) € -7.50 1 € -7.50
Remaining Time On 1st Pro_100 monthly after 2026-04-07 (83.3%) € 29.16 1 € 29.16
SUBTOTAL € 21.66
VAT(0.0%) € 0
TOTAL € 21.66

Now the story is clear.

The customer upgraded from Pro_10 to Pro_100 mid-cycle. UniBee calculated 83.3% of the month remaining. It credited back €7.50 for the unused portion of the old plan. It charged €29.16 for the remaining portion of the new plan. The net difference is €21.66.

No mystery. No guesswork. Just transparent math.

The Result: Happy Admins

One company admin put it simply after seeing the new view:

“It’s very clear now! I can finally understand why the customer paid €453.45 for a €1,200/month plan.”

The updated table now shows each component:

  • Proration Credit (Unused Time): €634.83 credit for the old plan
  • Upgrade Charge (Remaining Time): €1,088.28 charge for the new plan
  • Customer Paid: €453.45 (the net difference)

Every upgrade payment now includes this detailed breakdown. No more exporting invoices to understand what happened.

What You Can See Now

Before any upgrade. The table shows the old plan, new plan, and the proration percentage for the current billing cycle.

During the upgrade. Each line item is labeled clearly: “Unused Time On [Old Plan]” and “Remaining Time On [New Plan]“.

After the upgrade. The final payment amount is accompanied by the full calculation history. You can audit any transaction in seconds.

Getting Started

No configuration needed. This update is live in your UniBee Analytics dashboard. Navigate to reports, find any transaction, and click through to see the proration breakdown.

For upgrades involving discounts or promo credits, those adjustments now appear as separate line items as well. Every dollar movement is explained.
